Hydrogen fuel cells and Hybrids are the only way to go, from a purely technical reason.

Hybrid, for sure, but I would love to see hydrogen become more widespread than in just California

Hybrid, initially regenerative (Prius type) with a growing number of plug-in hybrids.

Hybrids are going to be the most numerous and competitive with gasoline in the near future.

I think I answered "hydrogen fuel cells" a while back, but I'm changing my answer to hybrid technology. Not Prius/Saturn Green Line/etc.-style hybrids, but Chevy Volt-style hybrids. "Common" hybrids such as the Prius won't "compete" with gasoline, but will supplement it. The Volt is essentially an electric car with a gas-powered generator as a backup, and I think vehicles using similar systems will actually "compete" with gasoline much sooner than hydrogen fuel cells.

I would hope diesel would, since that technology is already here, and that would double the miles per gallon, without changing anything else. And then if we used Bio-diesel, that would be all the better. I already have a diesel, and will never go back to gas. (I can out tow anything gas powered, and I get twice the milage. More power, less fuel - Sounds like a win/win)
However, I think hybreds are what people will choose instead.
